Cannabidiol is not a hallucinogen.
Don’t confuse CBD and THC. They both come from the cannabis plant, but while THC is the psychoactive compound that creates a “high”, CBD does not. CBD for dogs can help keep your pet calm, but in a safe way. And they won’t get the munchies!
CBD is a safe treatment for many conditions.
Just as CBD helps people to sleep and feel better, this natural supplement works great for dogs and cats. According to the American Kennel Club, there have been about 23,000 studies conducted on CBD’s effect on people and lab animals, which have consistently shown “encouraging results for pain, especially arthritic pain, itchiness, anxiety, and cancer.” All of these studies, reports the AKC, have at least one canine study as well.
CBD for pets can help manage inflammation, pain, seizures, anxiety (including separation anxiety), allergies and cancer.
Here are results from various studies of CBD for dogs:
- Dogs suffering arthritis were given 4.4mg CBD per pound of their weight twice a day for a month. More than 80% showed significant improvement in pain relief and quality of life. A lead investigator in the study said that some owners were considering euthanasia for their suffering pets, but after days of using CBD, the dogs were fully mobile, even climbing stairs. - Dogs with atopic dermatitis (skin disease that causes itching and chewing) experienced improvement by an average of 51% after 56 days of taking an oral CBD product with no side effects. (Source: CannPal Animal Therapeutics)
- 90% of dogs with canine epilepsy (which affects up to 5.7% of dogs) that were treated with CBD for 12 weeks showed reduction in seizure frequency. (Source: Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital)
- 83% of dogs that were given CBD chews prior to a stress-inducing event (e.g., fireworks, separation) showed a noticeable decrease in anxiety. (Source: Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine)
The research on the effectiveness of CBD for dogs is ongoing. Studies are being conducted for CBD’s impact for battling cancer, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, and nausea.
CBD treats are better than CBD oil.
When choosing CBD for dogs, commonly available products are CBD oil and CBD treats. CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis or hemp plant (not the seeds). It is then blended with hemp oil or coconut oil. A CBD treat delivers better absorption than CBD oil. For dogs, it’s also easier to give them a treat, and when an owner can provide the benefit of CBD without the trauma associated with giving it to them, everyone is better off!
